CARLO DURAN

EARLY LIFE

Carlo Duran, born Juan Carlos Durán on June 13, 1936, in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina, was Argentine by birth and early nationality.

Professionally known as Carlo Duran, he later developed significant ties to Italy, where he naturalized as an Italian citizen and resided in Ferrara.

AFTER BOXING

Following his retirement from professional boxing after his final fight in July 1973, having settled in Italy as a naturalized citizen, he pursued opportunities in Italian cinema shortly after leaving the ring.

His entry into film proved brief, with his acting career limited to a small number of roles in the mid-1970s. This shift represented a notable change from his long and accomplished boxing tenure to the world of motion pictures, though it remained a short-lived phase before he focused on other endeavors.

In his later years, Carlo Duran settled in Ferrara, Italy, where he founded and operated his own boxing gym known as Boxe Padana.

The gym served as the training ground where his sons, Massimiliano and Alessandro Duran, began their own boxing careers under his direct instruction and advice.

In his later years, Carlo Duran transitioned into working as a licensed sports agent, where he managed the professional careers of other boxers. Duran notably served as manager for his two sons, Alessandro Duran and Massimiliano Duran, both of whom pursued professional boxing careers starting from his gym in Ferrara. Massimiliano Duran achieved particular prominence, holding the WBC cruiserweight world title at the time of his father's death in 1991. Duran's agent work extended to additional boxers beyond his family, contributing to the local boxing scene in Italy during this period.

DEATH

Carlo Duran died on January 2, 1991, at the age of 54, in a car accident in Brugnato, in the province of La Spezia, Liguria, Italy. The accident occurred on the motorway in the early afternoon when the Alfa Romeo he was driving collided with a stationary truck parked in a lay-by on a slight curve, a few hundred meters after leaving the Brugnato service area. He was pronounced dead a few hours later after the impact, which sources attribute to a moment of distraction at the wheel.

His body was initially taken to the morgue in La Spezia for identification and examination. Funeral services were held at the church in Quacchio, near Ferrara, followed by burial in the Cimitero di Quacchio, Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, Italy.
