Eduardo Manuel de Melo, known as Eddie “the Hurricane” Melo, was a Portuguese-born Canadian middleweight boxing champion and later a mob enforcer.
Melo was born in São Miguel in the Azores archipelago, but grew up in Toronto, where his father worked in construction. Melo arrived in Canada on 5 October 1966.
Rising from Toronto’s Little Portugal, he became one of Canada’s most popular fighters in the late 1970s, winning the 1979 Canadian Middleweight title and amassing 32 wins, 27 by knockout.
In 1980, Melo was convicted of stabbing a bouncer with a pocket knife during a bar brawl, for which he served 90 days in prison. Melo was to be convicted 8 more times over the course of the rest of his life on charges of extortion or illegal weapons possession.
After retiring in 1986, Melo became linked to the Cotroni crime family and worked as a Mafia enforcer. His criminal ties led to multiple convictions, and on April 6, 2001, he was executed in a contract killing at age 40.
