EDDIE THOMAS

EARLY LIFE

Eddie Thomas was born on 27 July 1925 in 11 Upper Colliers Row, Heolgerrig, Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, into a working-class mining family. His parents were Urias Thomas (1896–1959), a coal miner, and Mary Thomas (née Miles, 1902–1982)

Thomas was one of six sons, with brothers Idris, Evan John, Urias (known as Hugh), Ronald, and Cyril.

Thomas worked in the mines at Cwmddu during his youth.

AMATEUR CAREER

Thomas began boxing as a young man while working as a coal miner in Merthyr Tydfil, joining the local Merthyr Amateur Boxing Club where he trained under the guidance of Ephraim Hamer.

In 1946, Thomas captured the Welsh lightweight amateur championship, followed five weeks later by victory in the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) lightweight title at the championships held at the Empire Pool in Wembley in front of 10,000 spectators. In the ABA tournament, he defeated T. Fraser of Scotland in an earlier bout and Ernie Thompson, the army champion, to claim the national crown. That year, he also represented Britain in international matches against France and the United States.

LIFE AFTER BOXING

Following his retirement from professional boxing in 1954, after a brief comeback hampered by persistent weight issues, Eddie Thomas shifted focus to expanding his mining business interests in Merthyr Tydfil.

By the late 1950s, Thomas established a gymnasium in Penydarren, Merthyr Tydfil, which served as the foundation for his re-engagement with boxing.

Eddie Thomas managed and trained a stable of fighters from his base in Merthyr Tydfil, producing 4 British champions, 3 European champions, and 2 world champions during the 1960s and 1970s. His fighters included Howard Winstone, Ken Buchanan, Colin Jones and Eddie Avoth.

PERSONAL LIFE

Thomas married twice. His first marriage, to Mwynwen Penry, produced a son, Edward, and a daughter, Lynne. His second marriage, to Kay, produced two sons, Rhysian and Geraint, and a daughter, Delyth, for a total of three sons and two daughters across both marriages.

Among his honors, Thomas was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1984 Birthday Honours for his contributions to boxing.

In 1992, he was awarded the Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Merthyr Tydfil. He later served as Mayor of Merthyr Tydfil in 1994, with his wife Kay as Mayoress, reflecting his prominence in local public life.

Following his death, a life-size bronze and stone statue of him was erected by sculptor Peter Nicholas in 1998 as a tribute to his legacy in Welsh boxing.

DEATH

Thomas died from cancer at his home in Merthyr Tydfil on 2 June 1997, at the age of 71.
